From our Public Safety Committee
Neighbors and Interested Parties,
Santa Fe and Longfellow residents received the following letter dated October 28, 2016 regarding infrastrucure improvements slated to begin in November 2016 and end in March 2017. The purpose of the improvements are to increase pedestrian and traffic safety. This is welcome news as many of you know who travel through the intersections of Market, Aileen and Adeline Streets.
A number of new features will also be added on Market Street between 45th and Aileen Streets. This should make it safer for our children to walk to and from Glenview at Santa Fe Elementary and elsewhere.
Our committee has made contact with Jeff Clark, Project Field Superintendent for Beliveau Engineering, the company contracted by the City of Oakland to complete this work.
This project is federally funded by the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) and is the second of three pedestrian and bicycle safety projects in our neighborhood.
- This project will shorten the distance of both sides of the intersection where Market and Adeline meet, making the crossing distances much shorter and hopefully bringing traffic speeds down.
- The signal lights will be relocated.
- Aileen Street between Market and Adeline Streets will be permanently closed to through traffic. The vegetation in this area will be replaced with a rain garden which may include Common Rush, Deer Grass, Idaho Fescue, Sulfur Buckwheat and/or Flattop Buckwheat.
Construction should be completed before the end of summer in 2016.
